Paperback. Etat : Very Good. J. G. Ballard author of Crash explores the extremes of ecology and feminism in this highly acclaimed modern fable. Newly reissued with an introduction by Rivka Galchen. Dr Barbara Rafferty is a fearless conservationist, determined to save a rare albatross from extinction. Her crusade gains widespread coverage when earnest young environmentalist Neil Dempsey is shot and wounded. Support for the conservationists grows and well-wishers flock to the island, bringing with them specimens of other endangered creatures to be protected by Dr Barbara and her crew. The island seems a new Eden. But is Dr Barbara as altruistic as she appears? Why are the islanders committing acts of self-sabotage? And whats keeping Neil alive while the other men sicken? A classic exploration of the extremes of human behaviour from J.G Ballard, this is a brilliantly unsettling novel in which all preconceptions are overthrown. This edition is part of a new commemorative series of Ballards works, featuring introductions from a number of his admirers (including Robert Macfarlane, Martin Amis, James Lever and Ali Smith) and brand-new cover designs from the artist Stanley Donwood. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. J. G. Ballard author of Crash explores the extremes of ecology and feminism in this highly acclaimed modern fable. Newly reissued with an introduction by Rivka Galchen. Veteran campaigner Dr Barbara Raffertys obsessive crusade to save the albatross on the Pacific atoll of Saint-Esprit gains international support when millions of TV viewers witness the shooting of her young acolyte Neil Dempsey on a foolhardy rescue mission. The coverage that results allows Dr Barbara to turn the deserted island into a sanctuary. It becomes a remote paradise home for Neil, an odd team of eco-enthusiasts and idealists and a growing collection of the worlds endangered species, sent there to find protection from extinction. However, as Dr Barbara isolates the residents more and more from the world outside it becomes clear that all on the island is not right. As the men begin to sicken while the women flourish, Neil is forced to question why he remains healthy, and will this change when a new man arrives?Brilliantly unsettling in classic Ballardian style, this is a novel in which all expectations are upset and all roles reversed. This edition is part of a new commemorative series of Ballards works, featuring introductions from a number of his admirers (including Ali Smith, Iain Sinclair, Martin Amis and Ned Beauman) and brand-new cover designs from the artist Stanley Donwood. Etat : Good+. A good+ paperback, defects on cov. as in image, creased spine, text very good-. Searing, visceral tragicomedy of epic proportions, this novel of a cult leader and her followers on a Pacific island is Ballard's triumphant synthesis of the range of themes that have preoccupied him throughout his career (The Kindness of Women, 1991, etc.). The story begins as an updated, ecological version of Treasure Island when Nell, 16, meets the scruffy Dr. Barbara Rafferty as she's haranguing tourists in Honolulu about French plans to resume nuclear testing on Saint-Esprit atoll. At first Ballard treats us to a wacked-out modern comedy as a ship is found âÂÂ" courtesy of a media magnate whose cameras turn everything into a live TV program âÂÂ" and staffed by a multicultural crew: a Hawaiian nationalist, Japanese pilgrims from Hiroshima, a pharmaceutical millionaire with messianic impulses, filmmakers, a French air hostess. Later, instead of being a setback, the revelation that Dr. Barbara lost her medical license for easing a dozen elderly patients to their graves welds Neil and the others closer to her, setting in motion a descent into our modern nightmare âÂÂ" the egotistical fanaticism that seems to pervert all movements, faiths, ideals. As Dr. Barbara transforms herself from a Jane Goodall-like savior of the albatross to a leader of an island biosphere for all endangered species, Nell grows increasingly complicit with her unspecified agenda. Lured by a psychosexual undertow into her powerful personality âÂÂ" entranced by her ability to stage conflict and renewal out of the raw materials provided by a media-saturated world âÂÂ" Neil and the others turn Saint-Esprit into a commune, an environmental gulag, a killing field. Into their maw come visiting hippies, sailors, anthropologists, do-gooders, fodder for Dr. Barbara's final experiment: an all-female society with Neil its lone overworked stud, his death, it would seem, a foregone conclusion once a younger, stronger male appears. As fast-paced as a thriller, and always distinguished by Ballard's hallucinatory clarity and precise observations: a fiercely contrarian novel that's both Paradiso and Inferno. Probably Ballard's best and most accessible yet. (Kirkus reviews).
