Hardcover. Etat : Good. First fully-illustrated US edition. xi, 332 p., interspersed with plates. 20 cm. Frontispiece, title vignette, Contents page illustration, and 59 other b&w illustrations. Green cloth with black and gold impressing on front and spine, blank impressing on rear. Bevelled edges. Front cover shows Master Zacharius raising the trap door in the floor of his workshop while spine shows the earthbound "madman" who falls out of the balloon in "A Drama in the Air." Corners bumped, small tears in spine ends. Hinges crackng internally. Bookplate on front pastedown, tear in front free endpaper, section removed from next leaf with small ink notation. Mylar wrap (removed for photos). Includes four short stories by Jules as well as a fifth story by his brother Paul. The stories by Jules are among his earliest, "A Drama in the Air," his second story, appearing in an 1851 periodical. "Master Zacharius" was his fourth published story in 1854 and "A Winter amid the Ice" was his fifth in 1855. "Dr. Ox" did not appear until 1872. Paul's "Ascent of Mont Blanc" is at rear. Osgood published the first edition in English in mid-1874 in a small unillustrated volume. William F. Gill of Boston published the first somewhat-illustrated edition dated 1874 under the title "From the Clouds to the Mountains." Taves & Michaluk V012. Myers 16.
