First Edition. 233 pp, 8 1/4" H, red cloth with black lettering on spine, gilt lettering & black decoration on front board, blindstamped illustration on rear board. Monochrome drawing on title page by Arthur Rackham plus 21 plates comprising 16 tissue-covered colour plates (including frontispiece) and five b&w plates by Hoppner, Romney, Reynolds, Hogarth, Morland, Cotman, Gainsborough, Turner, Raeburn, Nasmyh, and Bonington - all present. The characters and scenes from paintings by famous artists come alive to the children who live in the house that contains them. Inside front hing paper is split - hinge is holding firmly, patchy faint foxing on the endpapers, foxing marks at the top edge of page 22 and the opposite plate, a small tear at the bottom of the gutter of pages 17 to 26 - archivally taped, light edge/corner wear, slight fading to the spine colour, light wrinkling at the top/bottom of the spine, small soiling mark on the rear baord, varying foxing/browning to the edges of the text block.
