As a writer of many books about plants and gardening, in this novel Mrs. Matschaat has incorporated "nature-writing of the finest quality in a combination of history, legend, and nature study." It contains 281 indexed pages with many b/w sketches by Alexander Key. At the back is a six page bibliography, four pages of Glossary, and an essay, "Rivers and American Folk" by Constance Lindsay Skinner. The condition of the book is very good; the pages are clean and free of all marks, tears and folds. The binding is tight. The green cloth cover is clean but has some fading on the spine.The title and author, stamped in gold, are still legible. The orange and green DJ, with its haunting picture of a cabin in a swamp, is in three pieces but is enclosed in a clear plastic sleeve.
