Livre Edition originale
Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Joel Chandler Harris' "A Rainy Day With Uncle Remus," first appearance in print, complete in three installments in this 1881 bound volume of Scribner's Monthly, which six-month bound volume is in very good condition in an early half-leather binding over handsome marbled boards, showing four raised bands and bright gilt titling to spine, with hinges in no need of repair. These humorous Uncle Remus tales in rural Southern dialect feature Runt the Pig, Benjermun Ram, and Mr. Terrypin, though of course the primary characters are the redoubtable Brer Fox and Brer Rabbit -- who were to become the stars of the 1946 animated/live action Disney film "Song of the South." The Remus tales are unfortunately not illustrated here, though the volume otherwise features plentiful B&W engravings. Also in this volume we find essays on Thomas Carlyle and his work by Ralph Waldo Emerson and George Saintsbury; lengthy essays (profusely illustrated) on the Wild Sheep of the Sierra and the Coniferous Forests of the Sierra Nevada by John Muir; a piece by Robert Fulton concerning his "Experiments in Submarine Gunnery" (from his previously unpublished ms.), a poem by Emma Lazarus condemning a Russian assassination, and essays on the New England lobster fishery by William H. Bishop and on the Cajun settlement Petite Anse, Louisiana, by Allen C. Redwood. This volume now reduced from $34.

As new condition textured black boards with red spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Neal Stephenson and Nicole Galland; Author Dedication; Authors' Note; Acknowledgments; Cast of Characters; Glossary and About the Authors. Illustrated with a repeating black-and-white bird drawing. ". a captivating and complex near-future thriller combining history, science, magic, mystery, intrigue, and adventure that questions the very foundations of the modern world. My name is Melisande Stokes and this is my story. I am writing in July 1851 (Common Era, or -- let's face it -- Anno Domini) in the guest chamber of a middle-class home in Kensington, London, England. But I am not a native of this place or time. In fact, I am quite desperate to get out of here. I intend to write everything that explains how I came to be here, no matter how far-fetched or hallucinatory it may sound. To quote Peter Gabriel, a singer/songwriter who will be born ninety-nine years from now: This will be my testimony. When Melisande Stokes, an expert in linguistics and languages, accidentally meets military intelligence operative Tristan Lyons in a hallway at Harvard University, it is the beginning of a chain of events that will alter their lives and human history itself. The young man from a shadowy government entity approaches Mel, a low-level faculty member, with an incredible offer. The only condition: she must sign a nondisclosure agreement in return for the rather large sum of money. Tristan needs Mel to translate some very old documents, which, if authentic, are earth-shattering. They prove that magic actually existed and was practiced for centuries. But the arrival of the Scientific Revolution and the Age of Enlightenment weakened its power and endangered its practitioners. Magic stopped working altogether in 1851, at the time of the Great Exhibition at London's Crystal Palace - the world's fair celebrating the rise of industrial technology and commerce. Something about the modern world "jams" the "frequencies" used by magic, and it's up to Tristan to find out what. And so the Department of Diachronic Operations (D.O.D.O.) gets cracking on its real mission: to develop a device that can bring magic back, and to send Diachronic Operatives back in time to keep it alive .and meddle with a little history at the same time. But although Tristan and his expanding operation master the science and build the technology, they overlook the mercurial - and treacherous - nature of the human heart. Written with the genius, complexity, and innovation that characterize all of Neal Stephenson's work and steeped in the down-to-earth warmth and humor of Nicole Galland's storytelling style, this dazzling, vividly realized novel will make you believe in the impossible, and take you to places - and times - beyond imagining." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

Hardcover. Etat : As New. Etat de la jaquette : As New. Siripant, Ploy (jacket design); Holland, Joel (hand-lettering); McIntosh, Rachael (author photograph); Szafranski, Paula Russell (book design) (illustrateur). 1st Edition. As new condition brown boards, green spine and gold spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Preliminary Page Note to the Reader and Quote; Introduction; Epologue: A Whisper From a Mountain; Suggested Reading; Acknowledgments and About the Authors. A tiny remainder dot at the lower page edge (see photographs). " "Pure heart" is a whiskey-making term. The start of a distillation is filled with poisons that burn off at low temperatures. That's the heads. The end of a run is full of greasy heavy oils that burn off at high temperatures. That's the tails. The center of the run, where the temperature is perfect, is chlled the heart, because the spirit found there is pure and clear. When I learnd this, I vowed to throw the heads and tails away, so that my moonshine was nothing but pure heart. I also vowed to incorporate that concept into my daily life. Every decision I make, whether for my business or my family, I try to make with a pure heart." - from the rear outer jacket. "There is nothing stronger than a mother's love .except a good glass of moonshine. The mountains of North Carolina are rich - lush with the greens and blues of the seven-mile views and bursting with a culture where the ways of Old Appalachia meet the new South. This is the heart of moonshine county, where they practice an art passed down from generation to generation, crafted not only out of pride and ingenuity, but also out of a daring to push the boundaries of the law to create a product that hs come, in many ways, to symbolize America. Troy Ball is a classic Southern belle, with an easy charm, impeccalbe manners, a wide smile, and golden-blond hair. But beneath that crisp white blouse and strand of pearls is a streak of tenacity a mile wide. In the early 2000s, Troy and her husband, Charlie, left their native Texas for the up-and-comping town of Asheville, North Carolina, because the climate was better for the health of their two severely ill, special-needs sons. Troy found there something the dedicated mom never expected: time for herself. And then along came Forrest Jarrett, an Appalachian raconteur with a pickup truck, a thousand stories to tell, and a sip or two of white squeezings, aka moonshine, to share with the newcomer. What followed was a surprising friendship and a five year journey into the heart of distilling ol-fashioned corn whiskey. Stretching back to Colonial times and forward to today and the Byzantine laws Troy had to navigate to become the first femaile legal moonshiner in the history of the South, this is a true moonshine-making odyssey that will touch your soul. When the real estate crash wiped out her family financially and threatened the safet of her children, Troy realized that moonshine was more than a hobby .her world-class whiskey (and newfound friends) could save her family, too. Pure Heart is a story of dedication, inspiration, and days spent in a run-down shack in the company of some of the finest and funniest good-old boys you'd ever want to meet. It is the story of how a strog woman used grit and determination to launch a thriving business, and what a mother will do to help her children. It is also about sharing a drink with friends - and all that is great about the South.
