About Tao Te Ching by Lao-Tzu

The Tao Te Ching, Daodejing, Dao De Jing, or Daode jing, also simply referred to as the Laozi, is a Chinese classic text. According to tradition, it was written around 6th century BC by the sage Laozi , a record-keeper at the Zhou dynasty court, by whose name the text is known in China. The text's true authorship and date of composition or compilation are still debated, although the oldest excavated text dates back to the late 4th century BC. The Tao Te Ching, along with the Zhuangzi, is a fundamental text for both philosophical and religious Taoism, and strongly influenced other schools, such as Legalism, Confucianism, and Chinese Buddhism, which when first introduced into China was largely interpreted through the use of Daoist words and concepts. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers, and even gardeners, have used the Daodejing as a source of inspiration. Its influence has also spread widely outside East Asia, and is among the most translated works in world literature. The Wade–Giles romanization "Tao Te Ching" dates back to early English transliterations in the late 19th century; its influence can be seen in words and phrases that have become well established in English. "Daodejing" is the pinyin romanization.

Présentation de l'éditeur :
"The Path of Virtue: The Illustrated Tao Te Ching" presents the classic Chinese text, as translated by James Legge, alongside elegant drawings, paintings and sculptures from the extensive collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art. This book is the next publication in "Abrams" series of illustrated spiritual and philosophical works, preceded by "The Book of Psalms" and "The Way of the Buddha".Composed in the 6th century BC by Lao-Tzu, a sage and recordkeeper in the Zhou court, the "Tao Te Ching" was originally the basis of Taoist philosophy, later adopted by Chinese Buddhists as a complement to their basic religious tenets. It has now come to be referred to as a political handbook for rulers, as well as a practical guide for daily life. Legge's rendering, presented here unabridged, is among the most poetic translations in English. Accompanied by artwork with Taoist themes and bound in a three-piece case with gilding and a ribbon, "The Path of Virtue" is a volume to be contemplated and admired.

Description du livre Softcover. Etat : new. Tao (the Way) is one of the most profound and influential of the world's spiritual traditions, and the Tao Te Ching (The Book of the Way and Its Virtue) has left its imprint on Far Eastern philosophy, art, and literature for over two thousand years. This classic of meditative insight was an important influence on Buddhist thought. Its key tenet is wu-wei, naturalness and simplicity, a mystical path of spontaneity and noninterference that fosters individuality and spiritual freedom.Although Taoism has declined in importance as a formal religion, its spirit of harmony and peace not only permeates art and life in the East but also continues to animate New Age consciousness in the West. This high-quality, inexpensive edition of the authoritative Legge translation will prove invaluable to seekers of enlightenment, students of Eastern religion and thought, and general readers.
