Many other books dealt with more limited aspects, but this book went to the heart of things. Twenty years later The Face of Australia is still in demand. However, since its original publication and the death of the author in 1959, a great deal of research into the nature and development of Australian landforms has been carried out by geographers, geologists, and soil scientists, and new discoveries have been made. A revision of the book was called for to incorporate this new information and correct the statements that have been found wrong in detail while still retaining the essential character of the book. J. N. Jennings, of the Department of Biogeography and Geomorphology at the Australian National University, has carried out this task admirably, supplying not only the new information but also new photographs and maps. Charles Laseron wrote a new and vigorous story-the adventure of nature in shaping a continent. This new edition remains as fascinating as the original.
